Elaine Sugar was raised during the postwar years in the East End of London, England. This was a poor and shabby area, covered with bomb sites; the few trees and flowering shrubs hidden behind fences. A sensitive dreaming child, she used art as an escape from the depressing surroundings. She took lessons at the famous Whitechapel Art Gallery, where, at the age of eight, she was able to experiment with various mediums.

Elaine dreamed of being an artist when she "grew up" and began to achieve her goal when, at the age of twelve, she exhibited at London's Outdoor Exhibition where she not only sold a number of works but received her first commission.

Attending teacher's college for three years, she majored in visual arts. After marriage and emigrating to Canada, through her teaching career and the years of child raising, Elaine continued to paint, exhibit and further her art studies.

Elaine is still a dreamer but now find her surroundings inspiring. Her subject matter is diverse but much of her work shows an affinity to nature, especially flowers. Subjects are usually realistically depicted but the composition is often unrealistic or somewhat surreal. She loves decoration and pays great attention to detail. For this reason, her favorite mediums are gouache and coloured pencil or sometimes a combination of the two.

Her commissions have included a number of murals and art work for ladies fashion. She also designs jewellery. She now teaches art to small groups of adults.
